CP.
It's a V10 BMW, it's going to break down, and you will cry. The only reason he took a picture if it with the hood up is because that's how it will look most of the time.

Well there is a large BMW Dealer in town if we do want to seriously want to consider it we will take it and get it inspected.

Still, you have to consider the gremlins. The V10 era of BMW M cars were hideously unreliable.

IDGAF about transmission choices. The 2015 Scat Pack auto is faster in all respects to its stick brother. Auto is the new age. Fast is Fast.

When fast is fast and you can go through a corner quicker with the auto then the stick. Speed is Speed. Why do you think all the Hypercars and super cars are going to Auto/Dual Clutch setups. It's faster. The only thing I can see a stick good for is if you have a classic muscle car and it was born with a stick.

Don't get me wrong sticks are cool but when you wanna go fast, you gotta get the auto. I mean I want a stick car, but I don't see the need for them anymore. Like I would love a BOSS 302 or GT500 but with performance cars getting faster and faster and the govt forcing us to get better mileage out of cars the stick can't live in this world.

I've talked to several people who work on this type of vehicle. I don't doubt (or know) your mechanical skill, but this is a whole different animal than the Torino.
1. Everything is hard to reach, and involves dismantling half the car. Any top model Audi/VW/BMW/Mercedes tends to be a nightmare to work on unless you are actually a master German technician for that specific brand.
2. Parts on cars like this don't get repaired. They get replaced. Even if you were a good enough mechanic to work on one yourself, the parts are still stupidly expensive.
There is a chance that you could know how to do everything yourself, and that you could have very little ever go wrong. But it's not the way to bet, so just be prepared if things go wrong.

With all that being said, if you think you want to take on the mechanical and financial aspects of owning this car, it is a wondrous machine to own and drive. I've been in a 640i from that era, and it was spectacular. I've been in an E60 M5, and than engine is mental. I can't imagine what they would be like combined.

You're arguing with everyone that tells you that it's a bad idea, so my guess is that you really want this beast... So get it! You're a car guy...you know what you're up against. Just don't go telling the world that BMW's are shit just because the used V10 model that you bought out of warranty ended up costing you a ton of money.
I have bought two M cars out of warranty and I have been pleased as punch with both, not a single problem worth writing home about. However I have spend a lot of money over the years on just general maintenance and wear parts (fluids are particularly expensive for M cars).

Not really. Fun for me is speed. I mean Stick is ok but really having moved there arnt that many fun roads here in Kansas City it looks like. Just straight roads. Sticks are cool but really how much more fun are they? I've driven a hand full of cars with sticks and I don't see them as being that much more fun.

One of the biggest problems with BMW's is small, expensive parts that can only come from the OEM. And some of those parts require special, expensive tools to replace which are again, only available from the OEM. As long as you accept that every time something breaks you'll be out a paycheck, then you're golden. That's my experience at least.

I would Imagine. And No I wouldn't bash BMW but they are rather boring to look at sometimes.
I justw ant to know the reason other then OH ITS A V10 IT"S GONNA BE SHITTY CAUSE OF MILES AND OTHER SHIT. Well if I get it inspected and it turns out nothing is wrong with it I'll make them eat their words. But I know what can go wrong. Also Lemme guess M3's?

I did have an expensive throttle actuator go on my E90 but it was covered by warranty. In the 7 years and 60k miles that I owned my E46 I had one failure, an ignition coil ($125 installed). I spent just under 14k during that time period on general maintenance and wear parts.

ahhh, straight roads. That makes sense. When you have twisty roads, being able to shift in and out of the turns, and rev matching adds an extra level of skill and satisfaction to driving. I try to avoid straight line fast because the tickets are more expensive. If all you want is to go fast in a straight line, then fine. Adding an extra degree of difficulty is the fun part to me. Putting my foot down just enough to not break the back end loose sounds super boring to me.
Also the speed difference between manual and auto isn't noticeable from the driver seat. Unless you are racing it doesn't add to the fun.

stick is better for control in the snow versus a standard auto. The lag a torque converter introduces sucks. You can get used to it, but it still sucks.

I have driven sticks in a very limited capacity really when driving sick or drunk friends to places. Really only time I have had any real reason to use a stick is when I hooned my friends C5 Vette about. Snow doesnt bother me in Auto.

I personally know two people who have gotten the "Red Cog of Death" in M5s, both of them rendered the car useless until they were sent back to the dealer. One had some sensor on the SMG pump replaced and the other was a manual and the clutch release failed. They are great cars when they work, I love the V10 sound and power but the key word is when they work. If you have the money to fix it when it breaks down then you'll love the car, but don't think its something that's easy to wrench on or that you can fix yourself without 12 German dudes ripping the whole front end off.

I'm not saying it's going to be "shitty" or bad just because it has a V10 with some miles on it. I'm saying anything that does happen is going to be really expensive because its a high performance low production engine. Just because your PPI goes well does not guarantee that the car will be good for any amount of time after that. When I bought My E90 M3 I had two pre purchase inspections done. One by another BMW dealer and one by my Mechanic. One month after I bought it a throttle actuator went bad and it would have cost me $1100 out of warranty. Just go into it knowing that at some point the car is probably going to hit you for 2k or more all in one shot. Even if that never happens it's good to consider the possibility so that it softens the blow when it happens. The best thing that you can do is to strictly follow maintenance timelines/procedures (expensive as they may be) also see if you can find out if the previous owner(s) we're as diligent about it.

P.S. I just had my battery replaced in the E90...$485 and that's on the cheap! Dealer wanted $650. Pretty sure that M6 is in the same boat with the battery. The battery is over $200 even if you don't get it from BMW and then it has to be registered to the car using a BMW scan tool. Try to find out when the battery was replaced last.
Cherry_man1

WTF why is the batery so expensive?
Tripper
> Cherry_man1
01/27/2015 at 14:14 | 1 |
There are 3 different possible batteries (for the E90 M3 anyway) depending on the options. I've got the EDC chassis so I needed the most expensive one. The battery (non BMW) was $225, the BMW one (which I bought) was $375, plus even a nice mechanic will ding you for at least a half hour to code the battery.
The reason that the battery has to be "registered" is because the electronics are so complex that the battery charges at a variable rate, and disburses power at different levels for different modules. So when you put a new one in, the computer has to be told all of the specs of the new battery and most importantly the computer has to know that it's a new battery so that it does not overcharge. If the battery is not registered it will severely effect the life of the battery (because it will be overcharging all of the time) because of that you run the risk of damaging one of the what must be a million different power modules in modern BMWs.

So when you're saying you don't really care about the car not having a manual transmission, and make all those arguments about why auto is better, what you really mean is that you've never taken the time to appreciate it, or just maybe never really had the proper chance.
Got it.

I looked up stuff on the Audi S6. Maybe Travish has poisoned me but I think having a German super luxury car is a perfectly acceptable life choice. You just have to do the research. Life is too short to drive something boring.

This is good info. (crocker's post below)
Definitely have whoever does the PPI pay special attention to the VANOS solenoid and have a very close look at the SMG transmission, I think it's the clutch actuator valve or something like that which causes some big problems if it's not working right.
